New prospects in studying Li diffusion – two-time stimulated echo NMR of spin-3/2 nuclei

چکیده
The measurement of diffusion parameters like activation energies and translational jump rates of small cations plays a key role in materials science. Especially the in-depth investigation of Li diffusion in ionic conductors is of great interest, because suitable ionic conductors are needed for, e. g., the development of new secondary ion battery systems. As the standard tracer method is not applicable to study Li diffusion due to the lack of a suitable radioactive isotope, Li diffusion is alternatively probed by solid state NMR techniques. With the different NMR methods being available, diffusion processes can be studied on different lengthand time-scales. In the present paper we use two-time spin-alignment echo (SAE) NMR for the direct, i. e., model independent, measurement of extremely small translational Li jump rates. To this end, different crystalline and glassy ion conductors like LixTiS2, Li4SiO4 as well as LiNbO3 served as model substances to reveal the special features of this technique. SAE-NMR, which was originally developed for deuterons, has also been applied in a few cases to spin-3/2 nuclei, like 7Li, before. The corresponding correlation functions yield not only information about diffusion parameters but also about geometric properties of the diffusion pathways, making SAE NMR a powerful method which complements well-established NMR techniques.

Ultraslow Lithium Diffusion in Li3NbO4 Probed by Li Stimulated Echo NMR Spectroscopy
While huge research activities are being directed towards fast lithium ion conductors as potential elec-trolytes in batteries, it should be noted that also materials with low lithium diffusivity have many applications in modern technology. They are used, e.g., in semiconductor fabrication as non-doping sub-strate or are considered as tritium breeding blankets in fusion reactors offering both a ...

1. Introduction The Li intercalated polymorphs of titanium disulfide – the trigonal (layered) and the cubic modification – form a unique model system for comparison of Li self-diffusion in two and three dimensions, respectively, within two host structures of the same composition [1]. Slow Li + transport in cubic Li x TiS 2 (x = 0.6) was probed by 7 Li stimulated echo NMR spectroscopy (see, e. g...

6Li and 7Li two-time spin-alignment echo NMR correlation functions of single-crystalline LbN are recorded. Around room temperature, the decay of the spin-alignment echo amplitudes is induced by slow Li jumps perpendicular to the LbN layers. The hopping correlation functions can be best represented by a single exponential. The measured jump rates are consistent with those which were previously d...
متن کاملComparison of 3D and 2D Li Diffusion in Cubic and Hexagonal LixTiS2 – A Study by Solid State Li NMR Methods
Li diffusion in spinel-type structured cubic and hexagonal LixTiS2 with x = 0.6 and 0.7, respectively, was investigated by solid state NMR spectroscopy. In layered hexagonal LixTiS2, Li diffusion is known to be confined to the van-der-Waals gap between the TiS2 planes, i. e., it is two-dimensional (2D). In cubic LixTiS2, however, Li diffusion takes place in the three-dimensional (3D) interstiti...
متن کاملGaussian Phase Approximation for Evaluating the Decay of NMR Spin Echoes
We present a formalism for evaluating the amplitude of the NMR spin echo and stimulated echo as a function of pulse spacings, for situations in which the nuclear spins experience an effective longitudinal magnetic field h z (t) resulting from an arbitrary number of independent sources, each characterized by its own arbitrary time correlation function. The distribution of accumulated phase angle...
